Cooling water is the medium for heat exchange between the nuclear fuel rods and the steam turbine. In a boiling water reactor, cooling water flows in from below the core. As it rises along the core, heat is collected from the fuel rods, changing the coolant to a mixture of steam and water, which is passed through a soda water separator and a steam dryer.
